FCC boss backs usage-based pricing for cable Internet access

By Yinka Adegoke, Reuters

BOSTON -- The head of the Federal Communications Commission said he supports cable companies' charging for Internet based on how much a subscriber uses the service, and also welcomed a cable industry initiative to share Wi-Fi hotspots around the country.

Not sure what do think of this, but I sure wish Cable Billing was for what I watch lol as I don't watch much, maybe a movie or couple shows a week.

At the moment our internet is bout 50 bucks a [sign in to see URL] lowest plan is [sign in to see URL].
Personally I wish I could find a 20 dollar a month [sign in to see URL] those days are gone in this neck of the woods.

That is going to stink. For many users, they will see no real difference. For those of us downloading game clients, streaming video or uploading/downloading videos and pictures on a regular basis, this could very well end up costing us.

No idea why the FCC thinks this will spark competition. Time Warner is the only cable provider in this area. Competition? Right. Unless Verizon can get FiOS to my house (they cannot), competition is very limited.

Not thrilled about this either. My wife and I were considering dropping cable in favor of streaming/broadcast. There are days that go by in which the only shows watched on our living room tv are either DVDs or Netflix. Instituting a data cap on broadband plans will severely limit the ability to do this. I hadn't even considered how game downloads would affect this. To download a patch or game install consumes Gigs of data...
