Board / Adventure games

As we have discussed virtual tabletop gaming, PnP gaming, it's really brought up a lot of nostalgia for "old school" adventuring with my friends as I was school.

My kids love to play different board games together. I'm trying to find a fun adventure type board game bordering on an RPG that would be good for a 5 and 8 year old. I'd like to find a game that allows for different character roles with an exploration aspect. As I've researched games, I've found two possible candidates:

]Mice and Mystics: This game is due out in August. It's a light RPG with an 11 chapter story as a prince and his friends were turned into mice and have to adventure through the castle to save the king.

]Super Dungeon Explore: Another action RPG based on traditional Japanese video game RPGs. One player is a DM-type character who controls the scores of NPCs to attack the players.

There are also a series of dungeon crawlers put out by Wizards of the Coast. One example is ]Drizzt Board Game. This one works ok with a 6yo. I need to try it again with her emoticon

I saw Mice and Mystics. Looks very interesting. In a similar vein, check out RPGKids. Dambro and I both bought it (PDF rules). He has run it a few times while I have yet to run it with my daughter.

Many other games similar to these I have written off as not being age appropriate until my daughter is around 12.

As Ryver said, RPGKids is great.

The first time I ran it was with my 5 year old and 8 year old, and my wife.

The next time was at the 9th birthday party for my oldest. We played in true D&D style until 1am with a group of about 4-6 kids, as some popped in and some out at various times, and everyone of the kids that played got hooked.

They made me make a new adventure the next morning until the parents came and took each of them away.

Very simple, with tons of room for customization and ease of building your own adventures.
