Just to clarify, my own personal position... I've put a LOT of time and energy into SWTOR and I've made commitments here that I fully intend to keep unless they shut it down, which I seriously doubt. There is still a viable player base, even if they've lost people.

I'm just really excited about being more intentional about forming a gaming community for all of the potential and positives it brings with it.

For the guild, I would also like to see ways to bring the branches together. This is harder to do if there is not a unifying way to pull members together. Perhaps something as simple as a meet and greet in vent, but it could get noisy emoticon

I like a lot of the details here, Ryver. I think the Guildlaunch offering the SWTOR guild uses meets a lot of the requirements, but I'm not sure how granular we can be with the forums/content targeting specific games. I've been poking around the Insomnis Eques site to see if it would be a good fit.

Thanks Berk. And I agree that guildlaunch might work. I also created a test guild (based on our EQ2 guild name) on a different site. Feel free to poke around at [sign in to see URL] . Create an account and I'll give you appropriate access to play with it emoticon

I know the feeling. I use to spend hours just screwing around with OS'es and servers at home. Now, I have better things to do with my time.

Kaz, can you pull up the old code of conduct/rules that you use to give all new players? It wouldn't hurt to have a quick way to look at those for inspiration.

So... I looked for the "old code of conduct..." and found pretty much nothing. As I dug, I rediscovered more recent posts (2010) where I was reminded of another time where I was digging for an "old code of conduct" and found very little "written".

quote:

Ryverwynd wrote:
For me, it was always some form of have fun, treat others with respect and help others to have fun. We always maintained as few rules as possible. We must remember, officers want to have fun and play the game as well. It is hard on officers if they go to log in and then have to work on paper work of any form.

And that is precisely why I couldn't find anything. Its also why I spent so much time with each new member having the "Kaz chat" with them. I tailored each chat to match the individual and chatted until I was reasonably sure they had "buy-in".

As much we don't want to complicate fun with rules, I do think that it is necessary to think on this as we move forward with an intentional "birthing" of a "new" community. What will be the requirements to be added to this new community? Can just anyone join? Must they be already a member of one of our branch groups/games, or can we send a friend to the gaming website and let them join the larger community prior to joining in a branch game? I think we need to think this through.

I don't think this has to be complicated, however. A short application like the one I put on the SWTOR website might be all we need. For the SWTOR guild, I send people to the website, ask them to read the charter, then state that if they like the charter and wish to become a member then they should fill out the application. It has worked extremely well and we've found some great people, a very high percentage have proven to be very good matches with our gaming philosophy.

I propose that we do something very similar for the gaming community website. A "charter" or "code of conduct" or whatever we call it should be included to have something clearly articulated for members and for ranked who may find referring to it helpful down the road. I found this to support this line of thinking:

quote:

Talonthorn wrote:
I guess part of the difficulty here is that we all seem to have a shared but not entirely articulated vision of what this guild is about - and probably put unfair expectations on others to understand that.

Let's learn from our past.

So.... after several hours of research and copy/pasting.. I submit the following excerpts from many posts over many years from a half dozen or more of our leaders. I submit these just for our use in developing a "code of conduct" for our evolving gaming community. Think about it for now, we can formalize it later.

* open to characters of all classes, all races, and all levels.
*We are a friends and family style community with a casual playing style.
*While we enjoy raiding, it is not our main focus, we play for fun.
*Three things you will not find in our community are drama, greed and elitists.
*enjoyable gaming community that fosters friendship and adventure
*A group of mature individuals that want to experience a game at their pace in their way.
*members are encouraged to play without class, build, profession, or participation requirements.
*We play nice and respect everyone.
*Accept and respect player diversity in age, race, gender, orientation and play style without prejudice.
*Zero tolerance for discrimination or bigotry from members in-game and on forums.
*We seek to help each other achieve individual goals while exploring the content as a guild
*Group participation is not required, but is encouraged so that members get to know each other better.
*mature, creative, fun players
*our tag maintains a very respectable reputation in the gaming community
*refrain from overtly cursing in Guild Chat due to the fact that we do have some minors and others who are offended by harsh language
*having friendly and courteous members is a hallmark of the Knights community
*engaging in conduct that is against [sign in to see URL]. Is contrary to our principles and can lead to disciplinary action
*Keep it Fun
*There is no pressure to reach any gear level.
*There is no pressure to do anything but have fun.
*There is no bullcrap.
*There is no drama.
*People upset you, you take the high road, there is no revenge or payback.
*We will not be run like the gestapo.
*We hate to complicate fun with a ton of rules
*There will not be a 15 page rule book.

Despite the length of this post, I do think that this "document" or "statement" should be as concise as possible and refer to gaming community membership at large. Individual game groups (branches) may have additional things they wish to include specific to their game, but should never be in contradiction or opposition to the community statement.

Is there a set time for this week's vent/talk? If I remember, it's for today sometime? I tried to find a time, but didn't see it . . . then again, it's probably time for me to get some glasses emoticon
