Yes you can definitely contribute without a headset! You would be hearing what others are saying through your speakers, you just wouldn't be able to speak without a mic. However, there is a virtual chat function in Vent, so, if you logged on, I would just watch the virtual chat and read your text to others on your behalf if that's acceptable. emoticon

It’s great to see our group moving forward with the prospect of new games and new adventures. I apologize that I have been neglectful of the Knights forums as of late, after I had to leave SWTOR I perhaps introverted slightly back into WoW and overlooked the great things that make up this community. I would be all for expansion of both our gaming platforms and our method of keeping us all in contact. I think a new fresh domain would be a great idea and would be willing to assist in either development or a monetary donation to help in its launch.

I certainly will attend the next vent meeting to discuss this prospect, and look forward to catching up with you all again.

Sweet! Thanks Kaz emoticon

I really miss ya'll and seeing everyone together, and am so excited about the direction it's all heading.

A new forums with a wider range of accessibility and options would equally be appealing, though I'd like to make certain the "old" stuff here on this Forum isn't lost in the process. Perhaps we could create an archive on the new forums/Site?

Do we have a chat day/time established yet?

Unfortunately, we cannot export the data from here. These forums will remain so that we have access to the data. We should be able to create a link from the improved forums to here.

It is sounding like this weekend if the majority can make it. I'll be offline, but I chatted with Kaz and a few others this evening so they have my input.

Re: A community of knights

I am trying to get my thoughts together and written down. Here is my current stream of thought. I'll try to make it somewhat formatted even if it is approaching midnight emoticon

Guild/Site/Group name:

Thoughts include terms such as Knight and Family. It should also be short and memorable. The name will become our domain name and should be easy to recall and type so that new members can easily find us.

Knight for two reasons; 1) it has been part of our identity since EQOA, 2) I believe it provides the expected connotation for our group; honor, noble, respect, etc.

Family is also for different reasons; 1) we are an extended family, 2) we are expanding to include our real families as well and I want a safe environment for our kids to be able to log in and play a game with us.

Goal/Theme:

Kaz, can you pull up the old code of conduct/rules that you use to give all new players? It wouldn't hurt to have a quick way to look at those for inspiration.

For me, it was always some form of have fun, treat others with respect and help others to have fun. We always maintained as few rules as possible. We must remember, officers want to have fun and play the game as well. It is hard on officers if they go to log in and then have to work on paper work of any form.

This is in conflict with the roster item at the bottom

Structure:

Most of us do not really want to think about it, but we need some form of structure and even (simple) rules.

I suggest that each new branch must have an active officer in order to open it. That officer should pledge to be active within the game and site. There is probably some tough definition of 'active' that we should come up with; number of active members? Active events? The main officer (branch leader) would then work on building a branch specific officer corp and recruiting (can be handed to another officer).

I don't want anything really rigid here, but some idea of what it means to have an active (and advertised) branch is practical. Conversely, we need an idea of when an active branch is no longer active. This does not mean the branch has to go away, but that we should not promote it on our main page. All the content would remain (much like EQOA).

Site content:

I would like a single site and set of credentials for our new site. Everything needs to be hosted under a single domain.

Front page: I am building based on what Kaz or Grumble posted.
* Overall guild calendar showing upcoming events for all branches.
* Ideally, we would have public events anyone can see and guild/branch events any member can see.
* Voice chat status and who is logged in (must be a member and logged in)
* Links to active branches taking the user to a page for that branch
* Links to the forums
* Content that is updated on a regular basis; guild wide news, branch specific news, upcoming events, upcoming games, personal blog(? game related).
* what ever the content, it needs to be updated at least every 1-2 weeks. This should not fall to just one individual. If several of us can work on small pieces of content based on our interest, we can keep that main page active enough to help prospects understand we are active and engaged.

Branch pages:
* I would love to see a page for each branch. It could contain news/events about the branch. Show a branch specific calendar (rolls up to the main calendar) and links directly to the branches sub forum.
* There should be site guild lines (common theme) but branches should be encourages to create their own images to keep on the pages.

Calendar:
* This was touched on earlier, but I want to call it out.
* Each branch should have a calendar that they maintain.
* The guild as a whole should contain the calendar for each branch as well as guild specific events (guid-wide meetings for instance).

Guides:
Back in the EQOA days, the guild created posts for various strategies and/or quest info. I could see this becoming actual pages now instead of posts. Blog entries? Content from a CRM? Wiki? There are different options here for how to create and/ormaintain content. If we are building around a content management system then that may be a possible way. A wiki is rather easy to create content within on the fly.

Forums:
* I would like forum software that allows us to have nested forums (run board does not).
* Each branch gets its own forum section that it can maintain.
* Must be able to link to images and (external) video files.
* Being able to provide links as a forum 'section' may be useful.

Image Gallery:
Many of our members love to post screenshots or other images. We need an image gallery system to allow them to share this content with others.

I think branch level galleries would work to start.

Roster:
Through EQOA and some of our first branches, it wasn't too hard to keep track of game names and forum members. As we increase our members, we probably need a way to understand who is in guild for management reasons. Branches maintaining their in-game name roster and mapping back to the overall guild/site name would be great. I know from experience that this is a pain in the butt to maintain, but it really helps to understand who all those names really belong to emoticon

Events:

I believe that creating events as a guild and branch will help the members bond and form tighter relationships. And hopefully have a great time while doing it. How many of us remember fondly the old Vertically Challenged nights? A lot of us met each other on those nights.

Branches should try to work out some sort of events that work well for them. It helps keep members engaged and allows members to schedule their time accordingly. It could be just the LotRO crew hanging out in the guild hall dancing and smoking pipeweed. Or it could be something larger than VC was.

For the guild, I would also like to see ways to bring the branches together. This is harder to do if there is not a unifying way to pull members together. Perhaps something as simple as a meet and greet in vent, but it could get noisy emoticon

Re: A community of knights

Nice compilation of thoughts Ryv!

Understand, regarding the content of this Site not being transferable. A link back would be awesome, however. I just would like to keep a connection back here for two reasons.

1. Sentimental reasons lol
2. For new guildies to have a sense of the “birth” and development of the Knights across the years

Guild/Site/Group name:

Agreed about Knight or Family in the name. Skycaster's suggestion this evening when we were talking about it was The Wandering Knights, as we're all roaming players that are still bound together in friendship.

Structure:

Agreed as well that each branch should have an active officer in it as part of keeping that branch open. Regarding what constitutes active. Perhaps it would be best by defining what would not be active enough, and narrow down from there? For instance, I believe that an officer that only logs on once a week to game and forums wouldn't be considered “active,” while at the same time, I don't perceive active should have to constitute daily activity.

As far as what constitutes “active” for a branch . . . my feeling is that this should be more based upon active players instead of active events, for the simple fact that some of our guildies may be more active in terms of questing, exploring, etc, and less so for participating in events. My thinking on this is due to the fact that we have some Pacific Coast members that won't be able to make it, timeline wise, to some of those planned events, but they will still be logging on regularly, sometimes even nightly.

Site content:
Thanks for your work on this Ryv! If I can be of any help with graphics, etc., for the initial pages, please let me know, I'm happy to help with that. I'll also step forward as an offer to help with any graphics needed for subsequent branches as/when needed.

I'd love to see a Guides section. We could have a combo of Wiki and player/guildy topics within the Guides section in sub directories. Why not combine the best of both worlds?

Image Gallery:

Great idea. I'd also like to see included in this other ways to feature the wonderful talents of our Knights, knowing that many also enjoy creating and sharing in-game films, while others are wonderful writers, graphics artists, etc. This would provide a creative space to let those wonderful works shine.

Events:

Nothing much to add here except . . Hear, Hear!

It could be something as simple as celebrating a guildy's birthday as we did in WoW, on the Alliance side. We would get together at the local tavern, getting smashed, dancing, and shooting off fireworks . . while watching Aerotuk get beatup by Spiritread emoticon

Of course those not wanting to have their birthdates divulged would be respected for their feelings, but I'd also like to add some birth month/day info for those wishing to participate, and perhaps that could be added to the roster area? I'll be happy to help maintain the birthdata and/or roster as well.

I love the thought of a cross branch get together! Maybe we could have a quarterly meetup in one of the games, rotating what game we all meetup in for each subsequent event? I'm thinking as well that a vent meet and greet may get a bit noisy, but that's also a possibility.

Additional Suggestion:

What about a "Knight of the Month." This would feature one of our Guildies just for the sake of a "get to know Kazmara, Ryverwynd, Skycaster, etc." This would further help personalize the face behind the Avatar emoticon

Think that's the end of my ramble. emoticon emoticon

New Guild Name Suggestion:

Gypsy Knights.

Knights is obvious...

Gypsy...well look at us, we have been and are planning to be all over the place....

(And in the effort of full disclosure, The Order of the Sleepless Knights is pulled from the Jimmy Buffet song: Gypsies in the Palace.)

I like the concept of us traveling in search of new adventure. I looked up Gypsy in the thesaurus, and here are some words that stood out to me:

Vagrant/Vagabond
Nomad
Bohemian

You also have the medieval concept of a Knight Errant:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knight-errant

quote:

A knight-errant is a figure of medieval chivalric romance literature. The adjective errant (meaning "wandering, roving") indicates how the knight-errant would wander the land in search of adventures to prove his chivalric virtues, either in knightly duels (pas d'armes) or in some other pursuit of courtly love.

A quick search finds many guilds who have used this term though.

Hey guys. Sorry things are bad in SWTOR. I've been out of gaming and trying to get back right.

Anyway, I will return to SWTOR. If you guys have moved on, I will try to find a way to join you. I didn't much care for DDO when I got paid to paly and write about it. I bet I would enjoy it more with you guys.

I would love a Vent D&D weekly event.

I also have Diablo III on pre-order.
