Tips on performance?

I'm really liking this game a lot unfortunately the performance on my PC is so poor its pretty much unplayable when I'm doing anything but the simplest of soloing (and better stay out the water if I dont want my computer to explode!)

At the moment I have the low quality renderer setting enabled and all the video settings look to be as low as they'll go (which sucks cuz I've seen how beautiful the game looks at decent settings and its downright ugly this way).

I'm lucky to get my FPS to 10 - and when I'm in battle 5 FPS is pretty common. Its so bad I doubt I'll be able to participate in the parts of the game I really wanna try [sign in to see URL] would be impossible emoticon

Anyone got any good tips or recommendations that might help out? I've looked around the RIFT tech support forums and tried out a few things there settings-wise but nothing is helpful emoticon

I never had any problems with WOW which I ran at a nice resolution and with decent display settings - there is just no comparison how poor my laptop seems to be for this game

Re: Tips on performance?

I ran the beta on a machine with a similar Quadro card and it did ok at lower, but not lowest, settings. Was getting 25 or so FPS as I recall.

Check your vid card dedicated memory. If it is an older setup with 512meg then it will probably be trying to use some system memory to handle the massive number of textures in the game. With 2gigs of main ram that could be your problem.

If you can fire up a cpu/memory meter and look at usage before you load the game and after. If you are running Vista or Win7 you may have surprisingly little left over memory for the game.

On my new home machine I have 8gigs of ram. Win7 sucks up [sign in to see URL] on boot!

Wow there [sign in to see URL] my new home machine I have 8gigs of ram. Win7 sucks up [sign in to see URL] on boot!

I had no idea Win 7 did that,so if I get new PC with Win 7 ide better have a good vcard and lotta Ram ?

Im pretty naive bout PCS BUT currently shopping for a new [sign in to see URL] info would be great.

I have Rift on this old desktop and it has only 1 gig of [sign in to see URL] a midrange [sign in to see URL] it on low rendering and get bout 20 to 40 fps.
But it drags a bit sometimes too.

Sounds to me like VC has it pegged tho.
Hope you can get it ironed out.

The key thing is to make sure that your graphics card has DEDICATED memory and not SHARED. Many machines quote '1 gig video memory' but when you read the fine print it is shared, which means the card sucks it out of your main memory. This reduces what you have for Windows and programs AND is much slower than dedicated.

My son had a machine that my wife got him that looked like it had a decent card, spec wise, but he was getting all of 10 FPS in Lego Universe with tons of lag with minimum settings. I put in a real card with 512meg dedicated and he now runs full resolution at near full settings at 30+ FPS.

For system memory more is always better. No matter what you have, Windows will hog as much as it can.

For my last desktop (after LotRO fried my iMac) I got a mid range system and then purchased a very good video card and an upgraded power supply. Was way cheaper than getting a machine with the equivalent card preinstalled. Not for the faint of heart though if you are not comfortable with opening up your new PC.

If you are purchasing a new PC, look for 4GB minimum. That should be pretty standard. As vcnews said, you want a dedicated video card.

If you can get 6GB or 8GB system memory on the PC, great! My Win7 boots up and uses about 33% of my 8GB immediately. There is a *lot* of headroom with 8GB.

Something to remember. As your OS (Windows for most of you) uses memory and gets close to the system total amount of memory, it wil start writing chucks of memory to disk (this is called swapping, its normal). The problem is that disk writes (and reads to recall it later) are *very* slow compared to system memory. If you have 4GB RAM and booting uses [sign in to see URL], you only have ~800MB (less than 1GB) headroom before your PC starts swapping which will slow everything down. If you had 6GB instead, you would have [sign in to see URL] of headroom on the system memory and you will swap a lot less, thus making your PC respond faster.

Not sure if you're all still playing but just thought I'd let you know I canceled my RIFT account - wish I could play but the performance on my computer is so bad I don't want to put myself through the torture emoticon

Annoyingly, Trion somehow charged my CC for a 3 month subscription, not sure why that is - thought the first month was free and you just put in a CC for validation but they went ahead and billed me anyway emoticon

Sorry to hear you won't be able to join us Tal emoticon

But also understand your frustration. Hope to see you in another game sometime though!

We knew there was a reason all the gear & bags we sent ya got returned emoticon sorry to hear that bro. It's impossible to play any game like that.

We too signed up for the 3 month plan with the first month being free. So our free month came and went then Trion charged us for the next three months. I remember the 3month plan was selected by default though, so maybe it's possible-that was the reason you got billed.

Hate to hijack Rift thread but LoTRo still free and not nearly as GPU intensive emoticon
