Great to see your house, Ken!! I'd love to stop in and join you for some Hobbit pipeweed and a pint!!

I came across this post that helps clarify the different account types:

http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?377885-What-happens-if...-answers-about-the-account-types

I won't cut and paste, but it has some great information and clarifies some questions I had about Turbine Points and VIP access.

Re: The search for another MMO

Finished the RIFT beta yesterday. I have to say that I was very impressed over all. It was very polished and did not feel like a Beta at all (I was in the WoW beta and that felt like something unfinished at the time).

Things that I liked:

Classes. While there are only 4 basic classes the variety that you have with the various "soul" paths is amazing. The potential to customize your character's play style is just mind blowing.

Characters. There are only six races, of which some are pretty similar, however you do have a lot of customization options when creating the look you want.

Graphics. WOW, just WOW. It has a very Guild Wars look to it but more refined. When looked at close up the textures are just beautiful.

Story. I played both factions through the starting zones. They have a very good story line and I found both very compelling. The lore behind each is interesting and complex and you quickly realize that there is much more to them than a "good" side and a "bad" side.

RIFTS and World Events. The Rifts are started by individual characters but then become open world events with rewards for everyone who helps close them. There is even an auto public group/raid where everyone there just teams up. Created a nice cooperative 'we are in this together' feel.

Resources. Their resource system seems to be very good. For example casters have Mana as you would expect but also Charge. Charge builds up as you use Mana. You then have abilities that can use that charge including one that after you drop combat will quickly fill your Mana back up. Down time is minimal and while there is food and drink available you don't feel like you HAVE to use it.

Things I am not so sure about.

Classes. The potential for overload is high with the large customization available for souls, skills, and talents. Trying to decide what to play is HARD!

Graphics. Can you say too good? The textures are so detailed that I find when you have the camera pulled back and are just glancing around things look sort of murky as the detailed textures get distorted.

Story line. It is very linear, at least through the starting zones. I only got to level 8/9 and had not finished the starting areas so I do not know how they play out over the long haul. One of my big complaints with WoW now is how linear everything is. Of course it is much easier to really tell a 'story' if it progresses that way. When you just jump around at will you only get bits and pieces and have to fit it all together yourself.

Conclusion:

This game offers a lot of the things that I find lacking in WoW today. Class variety, class customization, flexible game play styles, good story lines that draw you in to them.

The people I ran into while playing were all very nice, helpful and friendly. My gut feeling was that a lot of the nice players from WoW who have grown tired of the polarized hateful community there came to find someplace to have FUN without all of the stress that is now LFD. Just seeing people answer pretty obvious questions with friendly HELPFUL responses was so refreshing.

I will definitely give this game a try when it comes out. After starting the stories I find that I want to read more and see where they go.

ARGH!!! LotRO is down!!! Turbine is having an ISP issue. I hope they get it sorted out before this evening.

I did get a chance to look at the player housing in Thorin's Hall. Very cool. It's more impressive than the actual Hall due to the multiple levels within the structure. I'll have to check out the housing elsewhere to see what it looks like, but I still have quite a bit of silver to save to get a house.

Perhaps we need to take over the Runes of Magic forum for LotRO! emoticon

Well, it seems I cannot play LoTR at all. The first TurbineInvoker service it loads locks up my computer completely about 5 seconds after it starts. Never even get to a program screen. Tried disabling my AV and firewall. No luck.

Bummer emoticon

Bummer, Tarq. I did a quick search, and if you are running winVista or win7, UAC could be causing a problem.

I hope you can get this worked out.

Running Windows XP Pro service Pack 3 (I think) on an iMac using boot camp. I have never had a problem running any program, including killer stuff like AutoCAD and 3d modeling and simulation programs.

I am going to try to see if I am missing any windows updates and check my graphics driver next.

The current WoW updater does the same thing if I have AV/Firewall running (running wow.exe does not thank goodness) so every update I have to disable those.

<edit - Update>

After doing some Windows updates I can now play. Created an Elf Hunter last night and played for about 30 minutes. So far things are very interesting and I look forward to seeing more.
