posticon The search for another MMO

Time for new content...so I cleaned up my hard drive, tweaked my network for fast download speeds, and now time, to spend time, to try some free trials!

EverQuest 2 Extended (Free to play)
I tried....old graphics....free i thought...i tried...different UI, maybe too much customization to begin with,... OK but its free...hmmm...level 2...on to something else

DC Online Heroes
I picked this up for the PS3, so far having a bit of fun with it, like in previous comments, it looks like a solo game with MMO thrown in, got a level 5 hero so far....not sure how i feel about this game yet, would be nice to team up with someone to have a 'Duo'

Guild Wars (original)
I liked the graphics, sound, I like how you can change the colors etc of your armor so you dont look like every other clown out there, and did someone say Dual-class...oh yeah baby..GW has some good ideas, ...BUT everything was an instance, held me for about 2 levels....no to mention you cannot group in free trial mode, etc..time to move on... (I hope GW2 is open environment and I'd be on board!)

Vanguard
First off, only a 20m download to get playing..the UI is much like WoW, so easy for me to get into it. The graphics are more 'realty' than the comic type graphics of wow. Though WoW runs faster, you need a pretty good PC to power this game if you want the 'pretty'. So far I haven't put this one down...playing a Pally in the land of Thestra. I like that mobs can be a bit more of a challenge, i also like the little 'dungeon master type' dialog when you enter and leave certain areas. the fact that its not just gear driven is something I like, you actually can modify your attributes, etc...so far so good....anyone interested in popping over to Vanguard for a few?

More later.....

I hope Ajop gets into this threat. I know he has a lot of great info we can use. I'm interesting in trying out both Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online. Both have Free 2 Play models with micro-transactions and have done well since switching to those models.

There are a ton of crazy MMOs out there. Check out massively.com if you need some more ideas.

Re: The search for another MMO

I really liked the looks and concepts of GuildWars but after getting to their version of the shattering (cannot remember what they called it now) I found that it was virtually impossible to solo and having to 'hire' NPCs to run with me was, well, dull.

Was lucky enough to get into the next Beta for RIFT which starts tomorrow. After looking at their videos and reading about it (love all of the 'stories' they use to describe their classes instead of dull stats) I was impressed with the potential it has.

This expansion has about killed WoW for me. The stories are great but once I got Tarq to 85 there was basically NOTHING to do. I so miss the Isle at the end of BC where we could just go and do some relaxing daily quests for fun and profit. WotLK was ok with all of the factions you could do dailies for to gain rep and get some good gear. Now I log in, go ok now what, and just log off. Currently leveling my original WoW character, a NE Druid, and that has been fun so far (he is 28) but not sure I can do Outlands/Northrend again even if it is from the Alliance standpoint.

I have more fun with Lego Universe. Played about an hour last night with my 8 year old son. Was a blast having him 'help' Daddy smash stormling spiders I needed for a quest. Had Mommy cracking up as he would yell out "No you DON'T, you won't hurt MY buddy!" emoticon

I heard a lot about Rifts, and its the next MMO to roll out, you got a Beta!!! Thats awesome! Let me know how it goes. More on Vanguard..reminds me of EQOA with better graphics. Able to own property, build a house, even build a ship. alot of the same classes as EQOA, (bards, druids) and even the old XP debt for dying if you dont get your tombstone...yes, you really wanna play smart and NOT die! Aging mmo, but with a year or two of life in it yet.

Today I am going to DL LOTR again, Nancy and I tried the trial last year and we both enjoyed it. D&D online was fun too, reminded me of the old days rolling dice...it was heavy on the instancing though, like guildwars, the only place you see other peeps is in a city, everything else is a private instance, takes away from the fantasy, and makes it look like you are in a solo game...for me anyways.

Vanguard is one of those games I always wanted to play, but never could for various reasons. When it first came out, my PC could not run it. Combination of a poor, untuned engine and an aging PC. By the time I could run it, I did not know anyone else playing it.

I did get to see a video of a guild hall being built. Very impressive though it was a *lot* of work by the players.

DDO is purely instance based. It is fun when a group of 4-6 people though. I think it might be best to be played once a week with a dedicated crew of people to stay the same level.

LotRO is one I have installed as well. The graphics are still nice. I have only hit around early teens (12 or 12 I think). I have not played it much recently, but might give it a whirl again.

WoW is starting to lose my interest. I have a few buddies I'm playing with and they are probably the only reason I'm really still subscribed. I got my main to 85, which was entertaining, but I have hit the dreaded gear wall. Running PUGs does not interest me that much. I play with my buddies once a week and even then, we don't always run an instance (3 of us, 2 guildies or randoms). I have a level 71 alt, but don't really want to level her any more.

Or perhaps it is that I don't really need to look at MMOs. Perhaps I just need a nice 1-N person co-op game emoticon Hmm, something to think about.

I started the download for lotro as well. I was looking at some of the account options, and the second tier only requires purchase of items through turbine points to get upgraded. I think I also saw that if you purchased the game, you were upgraded to the second tier as well, even if you never paid for an additional month. I know I saw LOTRO in the discount bin at wal-mart a few weeks ago. It would be worth it to pick it up for less that $10 to get the upgrade.

Let me know what server to play on, and we'll meet up soon.

Funny that you should bring this up. Cata actually has an Isle for dailies exactly like BC did. Not that this will likely change much for you in WoW, but if you liked the BC one, maybe you want to check it out. Its attached to Tol Barad the PvP area like Wintersgrasp. I just found out about it this past weekend. There's about 7 dailies there. There's a portal to take you there right by all the other portals in Org. Not sure about Alliance.

There is a portal in Stormwind that takes you to the Alliance camp on that isle as well. Or, just cross the very big bridge from the Tol Barad PvP area.

Heya Berk, on Brandywine server, Treelounger is my elf hunter...much better than Vanguard so far, graphics are AWESOME too! It does help that I like the LOTR world, read the books a dozen times, own movies, etc.. emoticon

Looks like I will be playing here for a while..hehe, so feel free to send a hail. I am usually on 6-9ish PST on weekdays. I heard Ken plays LOTR, not sure what server though...
