Here Here, good one ol' chap!

I have the same kind of thought every time I see someone posting on the WoW forums about how you are 'fail' if you don't go study every encounter, min/max all of your gear and talents according to some web site's recommendations, and 'learn 2 play' before you even get to play the game (instances/raids).

So many people have lost the sense of adventure and exploration and now just demand results.

Kinda sad.

I have started leveling one of my very original Alliance characters, that had never made it past 13, and must say that I am once again having fun exploring and reading story lines.

Just sad to think he will hit 60 and then die because I just cannot do Outlands/Northrend again.

As I play I find myself really missing the early days of the VoT as we leveled up and explored together. Now that is not even possible due to all of the phasing every where you go it seems.

I agree, in fact, sadly I cancelled my account. I came to play as a community, to level together, to explore new areas, instances, and yes the occasional raid. I even leveled a new pally, all excited to do some tanking, but sadly left to pugs again..I might as well play a single player RPG on the xbox...which is what I'm doing right now....

Perhaps when EverQuest Next comes out, or Guild Wars 2 emoticon arrives I'll jump back into the Genre...right now I'm experimenting with DC Universe Online (PS3) and the Free to Play EverQuest 2 Extended.

Anyone up for something else?

Gerry

Totally understand ya there. I feel like most of these MMOs are just online single player games for 90%+ of my time. I still have a few buddies on another server I'm playing with. Well, playing with is a loose expression. We might be on at the same time, but running different dailies. Once a week, we might try an instance.

I'm looking forward to GW2. Even if that game ends up being a single payer, online game, I pay for it that way.

Love the comic, Berk. Totally with ya on the changes. It's sad that all of the exploration fun is pretty much gone after the first toon is leveled and even then you're basically penalized for grouping so no one does. The expectations of the community are mostly ridiculous and juvenile, imo.

The play is so linear its lonely and lack-luster, you're forced to attain a certain gear level to even enter instances now, and said gear is only obtained by a certain method - faction rep or emblems which again is very linear. Its just a time sink so that you can play end game which is also extremely linear. Then when you get to "end game content" the goal of most of the people you play with is just a position on the dps meter or a quest for the best gear score. Where is the "fun" in that?

I still enjoy the community of the people I play with, though. AIE has awesome people that play for the fun and avoid the average epeen thing. They like try different things and are in no hurry, always out to help in anyway they can. I feel really lucky to have found AIE (thanks, Colin and Lisa), its really the only thing that has kept me playing WoW. emoticon

I'm also hoping that we find another MMO that opens up some fun new worlds to explore. I'll leave the search to Gerry tho! emoticon

I'd love to try something else, but I feel like I have less and less time to actually play. I'd love to play WoW more, and a lot of the comments here mirror what I've felt as I have soloed through the new expansion (Finally done with Vashj'ir, btw).

I've wanted to give Lord of the Rings Online another try. It has a Free to Play model, but not sure how hindering the gates are.

I too am somewhat frustrated with the direction of the game. Lisa and I still enjoy the time together, and our 2 night/2 hour a week raids. But the "flavor" of the game over all has taken a twist that really does over look the journey.

At my age gearscore does play a big role as my reaction time certainly is not what it used to be. The difficulty of healing heroics, and raid contecnt has become extreamly difficult and leave no room for error. If a party member neglects a cc or steps in the stupid, my play style dictates to try and keep the heals up. As a result Im fiding that Im failing in my duty to the tank...all in all makes for a night of frustation.

Thus I have begun to play Tul again, and Im really enjoying the singular attention to "my" personal game play.

@Kaz - Im glad that you are finding AIE is working for you, we too have found that the community as a whole are all of simmilar mind set to Lisa and I. I sure wish that we were all able to allign our play time, I do miss playing with the knights.

I know we have had a few false starts, but perhaps we could re visit the idea of one night a week for some 5 man runs for nothing else but the "get together"

Re: How I play MMOs

Hehe yeah I am with you guys. Somehow I'm just not really inspired much to play WOW anymore. Its funny tho cuz I read wowinsider on my BlackBerry all the time and find the content really interesting - especially the lore posts - but actually playing...just can't get into it.

Few things with Cata in particular kinda left it lacking for me.

- Too much bland formulaic stuff. For instance, I'm pretty tired of the paradigm where you grind rep to get head and shoulder enchants. It's so tedious, and just feels like a worn out mechanic they implement every time just because they always have. Something like Archaeology, on the other hand, is totally new and interesting. It would have been cool if some of the mundane old ways could have been dropped when the whole game was supposedly turned upside down.

- Really not big on the new approach to talent trees. It's really narrowed down the flexibility and choice in it all IMO. Arguably there was always one "right" spec per tree, and the redesign makes it ridiculously easy to spec properly - but it takes a lot of the fun out of spec planning to me. I also dont like the idea that the vast majority of classes now all have more or less the entire same spec. And with no hybrids the possibility of some of the builds I really enjoyed in the past (e.g. blood but with ghoul pet on DK) are completely removed.

- The mechanics and mathematics behind this game are WAY too exposed for my liking. It almost feels like there's no mystery or intrigue to toons anymore - theyre just a bunch of numbers. And features like Reforging just make this so much worse IMO. Something like this: http://elitistjerks.com/f78/t115053-complete_rogue_reforger_tool/ just totally contradicts what building a character in a game like this is all about for me. I dont want the game design to cater to the idea of granularly tweaking one point out of Crit into Mastery so I can see a 1.5% DPS increase. Its so mathematical and boring.

- Items and equipment always amounted to a lot of what I enjoyed in these kind of games. The allure of some extremely rare and powerful magical artifact that I might be capable or lucky enough to obtain. In WOW it just feels like the gear anymore has no flavor or mystique - its just randomly generated names stuck on items that have been spit out by some itemization calculator. I hate seeing a new weapon drop in an instance and then compare it to what I currently have and wow - the DPS and speed are exactly the same, the only difference is one has haste and mastery while the other has crit and expertise. It just doesn't feel like there is anything special about any of the items when its so obvious that they've all been carefully crafted to adhere to some item model. I don't even feel like I'm wielding a weapon half the time - I'm just wielding an array of 1,250 itemization points. And there's really so few rares out there. I wish there was 20 or 30 BoE epic weapons that were extremely rare drops off regular mobs - stuff you'd see occasionally pop up on the auction house like you would in EQOA. All the gear is just really mundane and flavorless to me.

- PVP is all around ruined for me anymore. I miss the days of playing 39s on Boneduke - it was so much fun going up against faces you knew and recognized on the other team. Since the xp-on/xp-off queue change, its impossible to get a game in the xp-off queue. The xp-on queues are just people leveling up - there's no camaraderie or competition with the enemy. And people say the game is designed around high level PVP. But a quick trip to the WOW forums shows every day thread after thread of people complaining about bots and AFKers in battlegrounds. You know - I never once saw a person botting in the 39s battleground. We played for fun and for honor - not just to collect points as quickly and with as little effort as possible. It's really a shame that one area of the game, where people actually played for fun, and to battle for the honor of their faction - all that's been wholly dismantled.

Maybe I'll start a new toon to level up thru the battlegrounds. Other than that I can't see myself investing too much time. Now that I'm 85 and slowly working my way to gearing up for heroics kinda have to wonder whats the point. So I can get boring "heroic" versions of the same boring gear I already have...doesn't seem worth the time.

If you guys try out another MMO I'll definitely join ya. Took a look at a RIFT wiki and it seems pretty interesting. Lot of WOW inspired stuff looks like in that game - looks like a lot of possible customization character and class wise.

Kaz, Grumble, and I are giving Lord of the Rings Online a try. We had a great time grouping last night. We are on Brandywine if you want to try it out. This game is definitely challenging. The mobs respawn quick and aggro quicker!!! emoticon

Lots of PvE content, but the PvP seems a weak, because you play a monster or your player character. I don't even know if you can duel. It also requires a VIP account (i.e. monthly charge to play).

I like the Turbine Points based Premium payment method. You can even earn points through game play to purchase game items, classes, buffs, and even expansions. From what I can determine, once you spend Turbine Points in the store, your account is changed to a Premium account.

Completely agree with everything you said, Tal.

Last nights run in LoTRO was really fun. Totally reminded me of VC days. Berk on his tank going up against mobs 3-4 levels higher and getting a few adds, lol. Gerry accidently tab-targeting the wrong mob and pulling another add. We were wandering around an area just crawling with dwarves gone bad looking for our quest mob, a named. We had no "map" or cheat sheet walkthrough, just the quest log. We must have wandered around for 30ish minutes before we realized he spawned OUTSIDE the grounds, lol!! (Helps to actually READ the quest emoticon ) Too fun.

I'm playing a minstrel, which is such a cool toon. She stands at ranged and strums her lute (which actually plays music). Her lute does damage to the mob and gives a buff or heal at the same time. Some of her tunes sound different, so the rotation will actually sound a particular way, but she is always making music. I LOVE IT!

I'm playing completely free. Haven't spent a dime yet. You don't have to, you just get less equipment and options. I will likely pay eventually. Gerry paid $30 for 3 months of VIP. He doesn't have to renew to keep playing. I might do the same.

I'm still playing wow (too much), but LoTRO is definitely a LOT more fun atm.
