4.01 hits today

Today is going to be a big change. Class changes, talent changes, guild changes, all sorts of craziness!! I'm looking forward to the pally changes with a "combo point" type system for Holy Power. I'm also really curious how my shortie hunter is going to play now that he no longer needs mana.

Oh, free Respecs for EVERYONE!!! emoticon

A little under two months until Cataclysm.

Many of the changes look really good, hunter Focus for one, but I must say that I have found the new talents to be very uninspiring.

Considering they said one goal of reducing the number of points and talents was to offer more variation in selection that just did not work out. Being locked into 31 points before going outside your specialty tree forces you to take virtually every talent.

There seems to be two flavors per tree... PvE (dull) and PvP (not too bad) which makes each tree almost completely 'cookie cutter'. You also have to spend a lot of filler points on "random chance for a random chance to up performance for a very short time" type talents that I have never liked (hate RNG) or very long cooldown abilities that I never seem to use because I am saving them Just-In-Case.

I was really hoping to see good solid 'core' talents on each tier along with a number of optional 'utility' talents to select from. Now it is just PvE or PvP.

My protection warrior I am leveling is also very bummed about losing "ShockWave" for 4 more levels.

Yeah I feel the same way about the lack of choice in terms of talent trees. The way it is now you pretty much have to be a moron to not have 90% of the same talents as everyone else. Which I guess is good in a way but it takes away a lot of the variety felt like was there before. I especially dont like that you get locked into a talent tree and have to spend 31 points before assuming a secondary tree. Would be nice to still have the option of hybrid speccing.

Personally I like RNG. Never was keen on all the more recent trinkets that pretty much always just fire off every 45 seconds. Takes away the excitement around seeing something happen a few times in succession and provide some crazy burst.

As far as hunters go, I am looking forward to playing around with focus - especially with the aspect that allows you to steady shot while on the move. On the other hand, investing in a ton of INT combined with the INT -> AP talent at low levels made hunter especially devastating. Talon is getting to the level where INT is having less of an impact anyway though, so I dont much care. Wonder what'll happen to my +22 INT enchanted weps hehe.

Lots of very cool looking new abilities too after cataclysm releases! Hunter camo should be a blast, and really excited about trying smoke bomb on the rogue. DK's dark simulacrum + the whole enragable pet mechanic should be really cool too emoticon

Too bad gotta fly to DC early tomorrow morning, prolly wont get to check anything out til Thurs emoticon

Re: 4.01 hits today

For me, patch application was rough. I had problems with the new P2P downloader and had to switch it off. I also run my day-to-day windows user in a rights limited environment which was causing the patch install to crash, because it was unable to create new directories under Program Files.

I didn't get WoW fully patched until after midnight.

I did get to play around with my hunter some. Focus regenerates more slowly than energy - not really been an issue yet, but may be in instances. I lost some spells that bumped up to past 20. All traps are unavailable at 20, which causes the talent choices under survival spec to be weak.

I haven't gotten a chance to respec Alen. I'll try that tonight. I played around with the talent calculator for pallies and I agree that you are almost forced into a build. It almost seems like there should be two sub-trees under each spec for PvP and PvE. Still looking forward to giving HOLY POWA! a go.

At least you can play.

I had no problem patching but WoW now crashes my PCTools AV/Firewall (and the machine). When I disable my AV I can run WoW, well sort of. About 1/2 of the textures in the game are missing or replaced with a default Blizzard texture, the UI is borked and most of the text is gone (just fuzzy blocks of random color) and my frame rate is 1/3 of what it was pre-patch. After a couple of minutes the game then crashes my computer. Any attempt to change graphics settings causes WoW to just disappear completely and the computer is locked up (have to pull power to reset it).

I have tried all of the typical WoW fixes (delete WTF etc.) to no avail. Will try to update my video driver tonight but last time I looked I had the most recent version so have little hope that will fix the problem.

From the WoW forums looks like I am not alone in the toasted graphics problem.

-----------------

Finally got it back up and running. Now I have no addons and all of my keybindings are lost LOL. Played my Warrior a little. At 66 he seems to do OK as Arms (was Protection before which was great). Am looking forward to trying Tarq and Daelith once I get some addons reinstalled.

Has been a lot of mixed reviews of the new patch. Pallys seems to have been hit the hardest. Most of the ones I run with are having a real problem with keeping agrro now. Im very happy with the changes to the druid, Keth seems to have endless mana, and my heal hit super hard! I gained 9k mana to my pool with the changes from sp to int. Loss of the tree I think was a small price to pay, and besides I can actully see all the gear I worked hard to obtain now emoticon

I spent some time trying out the new grind for Alen. Holy Power seems too much like a gimmick to me. I'm still working it out, though. Mana is still not an issue with ret, but I was surprised how quickly my health went down with both Alen and Peital (arms war).

Paladins really did get re-worked like they were before Wrath. I do like the power auras to let the player know when a proc is ready.

Odd bug I noticed. My Blue proto-drake no longer flaps its wings when flying. When elevating, it's wings will flap, but when traveling, it just glides continuously.

My 66 warrior is taking a LOT more damage now then before. Part of that may be he was Protection before and Arms now. Regardless if it was not for the free 20% heal (Victory Rush) after each kill he would be impossible to level as Arms. Losing ShockWave as Protection makes it really hard to go back to that spec.

Got a bunch of updated addons installed last night and will probably try Tarq or Daelith tonight to see how they will do.
