Lego Universe

This is a new MMORPG from Lego where you build cool things and then go off to explore the Lego universe to 'save imagination'.

No levels and a flat gear system to make it more kid friendly BUT you can build nearly anything you can imagine it seems.

They have player housing, player created objects, pets, gear, etc. There is even a scripting language to allow you to build custom actions such as levers for opening doors, flashing lights and simple AI for pets and such.

Has quests that further the story of saving imagination, mini games plus the 'just go and explore' feature.

I have two preorders in, for my son and I, and I can tell you I have never seen a seven year old this excited before LOL. He is a Lego Zen Master and the idea of being able to build his creations and then explore the universe with them has him bouncing off the walls waiting for October 12th emoticon

Re: Lego Universe

I've been watching some of the news on this. My son is a LEGO and Star Wars addict. We play LEGO Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Harry Potter on the Wii, but I'm not sure if I will try this MMO. I'll let you know if we do.

I have all the lego games except Harry Potter and play with my nephews all the time. This looks cool, might get a copy for myself and see you on there Tarq! emoticon

Re: Lego Universe

The Lego Universe adventure began Saturday and so far our son is having a lot of fun with it. Unfortunately it is a keyboard turning game so I cannot play it much, the screen jerking when turning gives me motion sickness emoticon

The game starts with a fairly linear quest line that is very good for teaching the game basics. It has a WoW style quest system with the ! over the quest givers heads and a spot on the minimap for them. Game play is a combination of quests, simple combat, smashing things to gather bricks/powerups/coins and building things you need.

The only real issue so far is the typical lag all MMORPG seem to have when first launched. Most of the time it is not too bad but towards evening you can tell the server is getting overloaded when you start having problems moving and taking actions. Hopefully they jump right on that and get it resolved or when the game opens up for full play (we are in a pre-release group that got to start early since we pre-ordered the game) or it will be unplayable when the population goes up at release.

At this point I would rate it an 8/10. It would be 10/10 if it had smoother motion control, i.e. WoW type mouse movement control, and if the lag was not so bad when the population gets high.

The social aspect of the game has been nil up to this point as everyone is just running around doing their own thing in the training area.

I had the same problem and had to stop playing during beta.

Just discovered something yesterday... if you hold the Right mouse button you can pan your view AND if you hold the middle mouse wheel button at the same time, at least on my mouse, it puts you in Run mode just like holding both mouse buttons in WoW does! The graphics are still not nearly as smooth as WoW but I think I can play an hour or two at a time now (which is plenty for an 8 year old).

He is having a BLAST still. Does not get the concept of Gear Stats to make him more powerful yet but that does not seem to be an issue so I just smile and let him wear whatever he likes.

Re: Lego Universe

Lego Universe now has a F2P demo similar to WoW: limited content availability for unlimited time. I'm going to try it out with my son this weekend.
