Re: Pen & Paper/Virtual tabletop gaming

Gnellie I have a deck of encounter cards that are used for quick encounters or for the starting point of a whole adventure, and there is one with a wizard suddenly summoning the party and they being forced to fight for him, I had that one set aside for my last group once and never got to enact it.

I'm also big on back story and the last two campaigns we started (because I'm a believer that the low levels can be fun and when that character gets to mid level the history you had is worth more than any starting magic item or gear you would get from a DM when starting amid level character)...side track over....anyway, I have required the players to come up with a character background, knowing that if they want to come from wealth or power, that none of that affects their current character.
Once it was given to me I'd work with them as to why they are the place we are all starting....
I've also had the players start as just regualr folk, that learn their class through the course of the adventure....you pick up the sword you find, and you lean towards a fighter...you are reading the magic missile scroll you found, you are leaning towards a wizard....you want to try and pick that lock....you are leaning towards a locksmith (AKA Thief).....

I am interested as well..Generic Fantasy would do well for any campaign as it gives the DM more creative choices...Also Ive played many of modules that can be tweaked and made to be your own just a suggestion.

COUNT ME IN !

Ide really like to be part of that myself as Im quite frankly kinda bored with MMORPG Games at the moment. And looking for something fresh and what better way then to go back to the Original way !

And linking all the Knights to the game for fun and excitement. The creative process of our characters is the most fun for me as Im a big fan of deep development and Lore.

Lets stay on top of this all !! This has me very excited and Im going to start with my pen in hand and create my back story !

One thing that popped into my mind is, since some of us that want to give this a go, have not played tabletop D&D, how can we help to ensure that this is a fun experience for everyone, regardless of experience level?

From what I've read on 4e, there is a bit more forgiveness in terms of character creation. In earlier versions, greater care needed to be taken to look at one's character further down the line, whereas 4e appears to have more flexibility.

Perhaps we could all have some form of document ahead of time with a backstory of the world/environment/gods, so we can define our characters more effectively?

Any thoughts?

Re: Pen & Paper/Virtual tabletop gaming

As all seeds planted here, they seem to grow quickly from the attention we lavish on them!

The only issue I see with suggesting/handing out materials for perusal now is knowing which system we intend to use, as well as who is expected to be the DM.

I will officially throw my hat into the ring for consideration, but as I said, I need to get my new PC up and running.

When it is, Ryver and I and anyone else can test it out to ensure it meets our needs.

RE: Experience level of table top players.

In my experience a lot of the balance between experienced players and non can be achieved through the DM.

My last group had 3 people that played so often they could recite arcane rules from obscure text like they were reading it, one guy played sporadically like me, and I had two that had never played, ever.

The dynamic it made was awesome. The vets would help the newbs as required.
But I truly think all you need as a player is a desire to play, some idea of what roleplaying is (we have that covered here), and a basic understanding of your character.

As a DM I play loose and fast with rules anyway, my #1 goal is to have a good time with the players.

8 times out of 10, and I think I've told Ryer this, I plan for almost every option the players can come up with, in an effort to guide them along as I want the story to go....and it doesn't happen...they do something, or solve something in a way that I failed to expect, and on the fly the story, the campaign, and everything I had planned has to change, and it has always been for the better in regards to fun.

It does sound like we have a large amount of interest.

My only other concern at this point is how big of a party we can run with.

I don't think I've ever played with or been a part of a party greater than 6, not that it can not be done.

One thing we will need to strive towards, and again I speak from experience, is that we try to run each session to a point where the players are either back at town or some other location where the next time we meet, if someone can't make it, but another player can, it is easy enough to incorporate it into the story:
"Welcome back. It seems that after you all returned to Kinghtville, Ryverwynd decided it was a good idea to play a game of highstakes dice with the local mage. Turns out he lost and didn't have the funds to pay up, so the mage has placed him in a state of suspended animation until you can come up with his debt, or until he feels he has paid his due. As you get ready to set out you see and old friend Ajop striding towards you...."

Something like that....I've rambled enough...back to work....

Awesome, thanks Dambro! emoticon

Yes, I see we have quite a few interested in this. And no worries on getting your PC up to speed. Ed and I also need to get a headset/mic to participate as well.

We're so looking forward to this!

As I "work" I'm thinking to run a game with a party of 8 or even 10 can't be too much different than a smaller party....the biggest hiccup is getting everyone to slow down and take their turn...it's always easy to add monsters or remove monsters to increase or decrease difficulty....oh the diabolical thoughts I have.....and I am more than willing to play a character if someone else wants to DM....

It would be interesting to see how this plays into the 'complete session' request you mentioned earlier. As the part size increases (and thereby the challenge difficulties), I could see it taking longer to get through a single session. At what point does it become too long to be a single session in order to complete the story arc that is developed for the session?

I believe this can be worked around, but should be brought up to think about.

....and another thing....with a larger low level party, the opportunity to incorporate some tougher mobs presents itself....I can say from experience that a low level party of 4 or 5 against a 5 hit dice mob usually is unbalanced unless the DM "throws" some rolls behind the screen...
