Is it FACT or FICTION?

The rules are simple:
#1: Answer 10 questions correctly by typing either "fact" if you think it's true or "fiction" if you think it's bogus, fake, a rumor, a joke, etc.

#2: Anybody can host. Just copy the event in the calendar and paste it on whatever day you wish to hold it, and sign your name to it. How easy is that.

#3: The person(s) hosting MUST POST Q&A here after the event is over. In addition to the answers, please provide a little more info. The Truth is Out There yes, but make it easy on us. emoticon

#4: Answers given in guild chat may be changed before the host gives the answer, not after the fact.

#5: 3gold for every correct answer x 10questions. If you want to up it, by all means go for it. Announce it before the event.
---------------------------
Thank You Ed & Diana for the "all host" suggestion, etc. Good thinkin

1. White House Will Not Accept Christmas Ornaments With Religious Themes.

Answer: Fiction A spokesperson at the White House commented on this internet rumor (eRumor) saying no such letter came from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC.

2.Daddy longlegs are the most venomous of all spiders, but are unable to puncture human skin.

Answer:Fiction The pholcid house spider or "Daddy Longlegs" is venomous, but there is no scientific evidence that their venom is particularly potent. It is true that they are unable to puncture human skin with their fangs, but even if they could, it is doubtful they would cause any serious harm.

3. Eating turkey makes you sleepy.

Answer:Fiction Turkey does contain the amino acid tryptophan, which is a natural sedative, but so do plenty of other foods, such as chicken, beef, pork, cheese and beans. Not only do all of these foods also contain protein, which negates the effects of tryptophan, but we generally don't ingest enough at one sitting to feel it.
However, what does tend to make people exceptionally drowsy is eating a big, heavy meal-Thanksgiving dinner, for example. Blood is diverted to the digestive system to help tackle all the fats and carbohydrates you've consumed, which decreases blood flow to your brain and makes you feel lethargic. Drinking alcohol -- while watching football or during the meal -- only makes matters worse. So even if you didn't eat any turkey, you'd still feel like taking a nap afterward.

3. Eating turkey makes you sleepy.4. Coca-Cola was originally green-colored.

Answer:Fiction It's not clear how or where this rumor started, but it's been widely distributed on the Internet as a bit of interesting trivia. According to Coca-Cola's own Web site: "This is indeed just a rumor. Although the famous contour bottle is green, Coca-Cola has always been brown in color, since its start in 1886."

5. My real name is Kenneth Swiftwinds Van-Allen.

Answer:Fiction

6. The Chevy Nova did not sell well in Mexico because its name translates as "doesn't go" in Spanish.

Answer: Fiction This story is often used to illustrate the pitfalls of selling a product in a foreign country without doing your homework first. However clever the story may be, it's not actually true. First of all, it's unlikely that a major automotive company would manage to secure a deal to sell their cars in Mexico without a Spanish-speaking employee or Mexican counterpart pointing out that the name would be an issue, if that was indeed the case.

Second, the word "nova" is pronounced differently from the Spanish phrase no va (which does mean "doesn't go" in Spanish). So just as you don't balk at the idea of seeing a therapist because it looks like "the rapist" when split unto two words, Spanish speakers are similarly unlikely to make that connection with the word "nova."

Finally, there is a brand of gasoline in Mexico called "Nova" that no one seems to have a problem with, so why would a car with the same name have a problem?

The Nova sold well in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking markets, and Chevy never felt the need to change the name of the model.

7. An enterprising student financed his college education by soliciting one-cent donations.

Answer: FACT In 1987, Mike Hayes of Rochelle, Ill., came up with a novel way to pay for college. As a freshman at the University of Illinois, he wrote to Chicago Tribune columnist Bob Greene, asking for his help in raising $28,000 by soliciting donations of a penny from each of his readers. He figured everyone would be willing to spare a penny, and if he could find a way to convince 28 million people to each send him one, he could pay for school.

Amused by Hayes' creativity, the columnist agreed to go along with the idea, and in his Sept. 6 column shared his story and where to send donations. Within a month, the "Many Pennies for Mike" fund had raised over $23,000 with donations from every state in the United States, ranging from 1 cent to $100.

Mike eventually reached his goal and went on to earn a degree in food science, financed by the spare change of Chicago Tribune readers.

8. Arriving late to class, a student mistook examples of unsolvable math problems on the blackboard for a homework assignment and solved them.

Answer: FACT One day in 1939, a graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley by the name of George Dantzig arrived late to his statistics class. Seeing two problems written on the board, he assumed they were a homework assignment and copied them down, solved them and handed them in a few days later.

In actuality, they were examples of (formerly) unprovable statistical theorems, which he had managed to prove. A few weeks later, the professor knocked on George's door and excitedly informed him that he had prepared one of his proofs for publication. Dantzig's story became the stuff of legend, and was the inspiration for the 1997 movie Good Will Hunting.

9. Putting sugar in a car's gas tank will ruin the engine.

Answer: Fiction Revenge is sweet, they say. And what better way to exact sweet revenge than to ruin someone's car with a bag of sugar? If you empty the bag into the gas tank, the sugar will make its way into the engine, caramelize from the heat, and then harden like rock candy once the car cools down, effectively destroying the engine ... right?

Wrong.

Sugar does not dissolve in gasoline, and filters prevent any solids in the fuel from getting into the engine, so it is likely to remain intact in the gas tank. The only harm you can hope to inflict by putting sugar in someone's gas tank is the inconvenience of a trip to the mechanic to replace the fuel filters and clean out the tank.

10. Microsoft once announced it was developing a portable toilet, called the iLoo, in which users could surf the Internet.

Answer: FACT In 2003, Microsoft's MSN U.K. division announced plans to develop a portable toilet for use at summer music festivals that would be equipped with a keyboard, plasma screen and wireless Internet access. They already had some success with Internet-ready park benches in London, and were carrying the idea through to the "iLoo," complete with special toilet paper printed with URLs.

The iLoo project quickly became the butt of jokes in the media and on late-night talk shows. Microsoft's corporate headquarters in the United States responded by saying the whole thing was a hoax, but later confirmed that while their British MSN division had been working on such a project, it had been scrapped after the announcement prompted so much ridicule.
